Severe weather is a part of life here in Minnesota. From
strong storms in the summer to frigid blizzards in the winter, Minnesotans are
used to seeing a variety of extreme weather events. As a facilities
management company in Minneapolis, we have helped our share of clients with
post-storm clean-up. So we have a few suggestions on what to look for at your
commercial property after a strong storm or other severe weather event hits
your area.
After you get to your commercial property, the most
important things to look out for are downed power lines. If you see any, get
back in your vehicle, drive to a safe distance away and notify the proper
authorities (more than likely, your local power company and fire department). If
you see any trees that are down or damaged, you can call a facilities
management company like Building Maintenance Management for assistance in
cleaning them up and getting rid of the debris.
Take two walks around your commercial property. During the
first one, keep your eyes on the ground and look for any roofing or siding
materials that might have gotten blown off during the storm. Pick up what you
can and leave the bigger pieces for a later date when you have some help safely
removing them.
During the second walk, keep your eyes on your commercial
building’s roof (the parts you can see from the ground) and siding. Are you
seeing anything that might be missing or damaged? If so, make a note of it so
you can get it fixed or replaced at a later date.
Finally, make sure all of your insurance paperwork is in
proper order and all of your Ts are crossed and Is are dotted. Call your
insurance company to starts the claims process before you contact anyone for
repair work. Find out the steps the insurance company wants you to follow and
go from there.
