Savings with Added Insulation

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heating and cooling account for 50-70 percent of the energy used in the average American home. If you want to substantially reduce energy costs, decreasing the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling your home is a good place to start. Insulation reduces the average home heating and cooling cost by about 20 percent.

So what does this mean for property managers? It means you can save money at your property by investing in added insulation. We provide contract maintenance for Bloomington and surrounding areas, and we know how much of a difference extra insulation can make. We want to share some valuable information regarding insulation.

It’s Cost Effective
Insulation is the simplest and most cost effective way to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emission. It will pay for itself in a matter of years with the amount of energy savings you’ll receive.

It’s Always Working
Once installed, insulation starts working and it never stops. No matter what type of insulation you use (spray foam, fiberglass, cellulose, wool), it will last the life of the building, and will not need to be replaced unless it’s damaged. Some settling can occur over the years with loose-fill insulation, meaning that supplemental insulation may need to be added, but the original insulation will still be working and won’t need to be removed or replaced.

It Goes by R-Value
Insulation is measured by R-value, which is how well the material resists heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. R-value depends on the type of insulation, its thickness and its density. Insulation’s effectiveness also depends on how and where it’s installed. For example, insulation that’s compressed will not provide its full rated R-value.

It’s Need Varies
Climate, type of heating and cooling system used, and part of the building being insulated all determine the amount of insulation needed and the recommended R-value. Other important factors to consider are sealing air leaks and controlling moisture. This allows the insulation to work effectively and offer the best energy efficiency.

If you’re heating bills were through the roof this winter, consider adding insulation. We can help you know what type, how much and where to add the insulation for the best benefit. Our team has already helped other building managers save money on energy costs by increasing the insulation in their buildings.
